{"id":3,"date":"2008-08-16T21:24:06","date_gmt":"2008-08-16T21:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitalcardboard.com\/blog\/?p=3"},"modified":"2011-07-05T20:14:02","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T04:14:02","slug":"windows-update-stallingstuckhang-at-searching-for-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitalcardboard.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/16\/windows-update-stallingstuckhang-at-searching-for-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Update Stalling\/Stuck\/Hang at &#8220;Searching for Updates&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No time for introductions.<\/p>\n<p>I spent <strong>way <\/strong>too much time today trying for get Windows Update to work on a laptop.\u00a0 When the &#8220;Searching for updates&#8221; screen would come on, sometimes the progress bar would be empty, other times it would run and run until it failed.<\/p>\n<p>I tried CCleaner and reinstalled the Windows Update Components.\u00a0 Multiple times.\u00a0 Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C:\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate.log<\/strong> showed a &#8220;SendRequestUsingProxy failed&#8221; message.\u00a0 What?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not using a proxy.<\/p>\n<p>I find bits of Norton around, so I run the Norton Removal Tool.\u00a0 I also end up removing Trend Micro&#8217;s PC-Cillin, thinking that it might be blocking the updates.\u00a0 No good.<\/p>\n<p>HijackThis doesn&#8217;t even show a proxy being set anywhere.\u00a0 So what&#8217;s the deal?<\/p>\n<p>FInally&#8230;Google returns this gem of a page: <a title=\"You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates\" href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/?kbid=836941\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/?kbid=836941<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Advanced Method B<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.<\/p>\n<p><strong>a. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 proxycfg -d<br \/>\nb. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 net stop wuauserv<br \/>\nc. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 net start wuauserv<br \/>\nd. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 exit<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And there it is. <\/strong>I ran <strong>proxycfg <\/strong>all by itself and saw this mysterious IP address for a proxy.\u00a0 SamSpade.org showed that it returns to BestBuy&#8230;hmm.<\/p>\n<p>So finally: &#8220;Installation complete.\u00a0 You must restart your computer for the updates to take effect.&#8221;\u00a0 On to more important things.<\/p>\n<p>Ugh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No time for introductions.
